Extension, redesign, renovation & deep retrofit to mid detached house
The design took a previously extended cottage, doubled its floor area introducing a two storey element containing the family bedrooms. There is now a spacious open plan kitchen-living-dining space with a vaulted ceiling and double sided solid fuel stove. This living space receives the sunlight throughout the day and primarily faces the garden and adjacent paddocks. A double height entrance hall contains a steel and glass staircase serving the new upstairs accommodation. The house was part of the SEAI Deep Retrofit pilot programme and its BER rating was improved from a G to an A rating using high levels of insulation, lots of South facing glazing, air-to-water heat pump central heating and a demand controlled ventilation system.

We had discussed other options and properties with Alistair before we found our current location. Once we were interested in this property, we asked Alistair to do an initial survey before we bought to identify any potential issues with the renovation and extension.
We liked Alistair’s work and style and once we gave him the basic parameters (rooms, size, indicative budget) he prepared the first draft. We met a few times to agree some modification and the process was always positive. Once the design was fixed Alistair worked with us through the planning application, the appointment of the builder and some discussions with the bank.
We met Alistair regularly on the site with and without the builder to review progress and agree a few very small changes during the build.
Alistair dealt with any issues that was related to the planning approval during the build and at completion and provided all necessary data for the bank in relation to the staged mortgage release.
We are very happy with the end result of our home and would and have recommended Alistair to others looking for an architect to accompany them on their journey to a new or remodelled home.
